Elementary Gifted and Talented Art Students Enjoy Galleries
Submitted by Sue Taylor G&T Coordinator LCO Ojibwe School
Students in the LCO Ojibwe School's Gifted and Talented Art program traveled to the UMD Tweed Gallery and UWS Kruk Gallery to enjoy Native American Art at it's finest. On the Tweed Gallery trip, the students and Chaperones worked with college art students while seeing work from famous Native American artists - Rabbett Before Horses and Frank Big Bear. The students used their knowledge of their Ojibwe culture to help understand the work they were seeing. Each student and chaperone received 2 books at the end of their visit - "from dreams may we learn" by Rabbett Before Horses and Drawings by Frank Big Bear by the artist, Frank Big Bear.
Just prior to the close of the UW-Superior Annual Native American Scholarship Exhibit, the students visited the Kruk Gallery and were amazed to see an entire wall devoted to the Lac Courte Oreilles Ojibwe High School artwork. This exhibit highlights the art of Native American youth in the area and also showcases works of professional prominent Native artists. Student took special care while looking closely at sculptures, glass work, shields, drawing and paintings. These field trips help to inspire and motivate students to pursue their dreams of going on to college, expanding their knowledge of Native art and fostering their desire to become the next Famouse Native American Artist from Lac Courte Oreilles.
