Look at the situation off our shores to the south of us, Mother Earth is bleeding and yes we are to blame for this disaster. It wasn’t a natural disaster, it was man made. Eleven people died and seventy-five clean up crew members have been treated for illnesses due to the effects of the oil spill. Billons of aquatic life forms have already perished, just by coming in contact with the oil that was gushing from the ocean floor. That’s just for starters; it does not include the numbers that are surely to rise over the decades to come.
|
It all comes from our need for oil. Did you know oil is not used strictly for fuel purposes? It’s used in everyday household products you wouldn’t even think they would be in such as medicine, beauty products, electronics, sports equipment, and novelty items just to name a few. The list is long and I do not have enough room in this article to try and tell you all there is to know about all the petroleum products out there. But what I do want to let you know is: it is not too late. With everyone becoming more aware of the causes and effects that we have already done to our planet, we can make changes to the way we live, and to the ways we use the Earth’s resources. We belong to the Earth; the Earth does not belong to us. We just live here. Humans are the smartest species on planet Earth, that is a fact, and that is a gift; but with having been given this gift from the creator, we also are responsible for what happens to our beautiful green planet. We will learn from our mistakes, adapt, and overcome. That is our strongest asset, the human spirit. We must continue too teach our children ways we can improve ourselves and the ways our future generations should manage all aspects of the Earth’s resources. Reduce all the waste you can, use only bio-degradable products that can be recycled or degrades over time. Reuse or give away all materials that can be used again instead of ending up in our landfills. One mans trash can be another mans treasure. Recycle all the materials that you can paper, plastics, glass and aluminum. This year’s Honor the Earth Pow-Wow was a huge success for the Green Team members here at Lac Courte Oreilles. Through volunteers and many of the local youth we collected over 760 pounds of recyclable items that could have ended up in the trash, but instead were recycled. The 760 pounds of recyclables amounts to over 8,300 kilowatt hours of energy savings and 3.11 tons of carbon dioxide or greenhouse gases that were saved from being put into our ozone! The LCO Green Team in conjunction with the Honor the Earth Pow-Wow Committee worked together to make 2010 Honor the Earth the “greenest” pow-wow yet here at LCO. Green Team members and volunteers manned recycling stations throughout the pow-wow grounds; they also assisted the food and beverage vendors with composting food waste this year. The compost materials were then hauled by Green Team members to the LCO College Farm’s compost bin. Some food vendors also had recycling bins in front of their booth as well as chose to ban Styrofoam and use only biodegradable paper products. The vendors who made any changes to assist with being more sustainable were given green vendor signs to hang outside of their booth. The Green Team also recognized each vendor on Sunday with a Green Vendor Recognition Award for their contributions in assisting the Honor the Earth Pow-Wow become more sustainable. Chi-Miigwech to all Green Vendors!!
