Living Memories Project to be unveiled on July 14th
Submitted by Mary F. Tribble
Project Coordinator

As far back as December, 2008 discussions began on how to best utilize space in the Migizi Cultural Resource Center. Discussions centered on an exhibit with a cultural aspect that could be used as an educational tool as well. A “visioning” session was held on March 11, 2009 and an idea was born.
Session participants discussed having a mural constructed by local artists depicting significant historical events such as the Flooding of Post and the Hayward School Walk-out, which were traumatic at the time but eventually led (or hope to lead) to healing or a positive outcome.
The mural would be painted on portable panels to aide in the moving and sharing of this project with other community organizations and educational institutes. The use of panels will also make future additions possible by simply inserting the panel (event) where appropriate.
The project design is intended to be a starting point of depicting what happened historically and begin exploring how these events may have impacted and (or) continues to impact individuals and families in the community today. The “vision” for this project is to be a work in progress with the primary purpose of continually adding our Living Memories.
Please join us for the Unveiling Ceremonies on Wednesday, July 14, 2010 at 10:00 a.m. in the Migizi Cultural Resource on the LCO Ojibwe Community College campus. If you are not able to attend this event, the exhibit will relocate to the LCO K-12 School Gym for viewing during the Honor The Earth Pow-Wow on Thursday, Friday & Saturday – July 15, 16 & 17 from 3:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. all three days.
