LCOOCC hosts experimental learning canoe trip
On Wednesday June 16th the LCOOCC Extension Department hosted a day long experiential learning canoe trip down an 11 mile segment of the Bois Brule River. We had a fun day of canoeing the historic and culturally significant Bois Brule River. The Brule was utilized by the Ojibwe as a transportation route, as it connects the St. Croix River to Lake Superior. We paddled the section from Stone’s Bridge Landing off County RD. S to the Hwy 2 Landing in Douglas County (11.2 miles). While this portion of the river is rated for the “novice”, it provided an exciting introduction to canoeing, as it has several sections of fast moving water and rapids. We have 7 canoes, had 3 others brought their own canoes and we had one kayaker. We had a total of 26 local community members participate in the canoe trip.

We are hosting an over night canoe trip on the 30th and 31st of July on the Namekagon River. If you are interested come join us for an overnight canoe trip on the Namekagon River. We will put in, on Friday morning, July 30th, at the County Road K Landing near Trego, and we will camp, on Friday evening, fourteen miles down river at the Howell Landing Campground. We will then canoe an additional 11.5 miles, on Saturday, July 31st, to the Namekagon Trail Landing.

During this canoe camp trip we will have a unique opportunity to discuss regional Ojibwe history and culture while canoeing and camping along a major historical Ojibwe transportation route. Dave Bisonette will assist as a cultural and historical guide for our two day canoe trip. We have 7 canoes available and are limiting the number of participants to roughly 20 – 24. If you have your own canoe and would like to join us, please register and indicate that you have your own canoe. Also, bring your own sleeping bag, light overnight items and a change of clothing for camping.

Registration for this workshop is free. Please bring a sack lunch and drinks for the first day of the trip. We will provide Supper for the first day and Breakfast and Lunch for the second day.

Sign up for the trip by phone, e-mail, or drop by in person to sign up:
