| Lac du Flambeau Honoring Our Children project |
The Lac du Flambeau Honoring Our Children project wrapped up four weeks of cradle board making classes. Instructor Wayne Valliere taught the Honoring Our Children participants how to construct a Lac du Flambeau style “dikinaagan” for their babies on the way.
The classes were held every Tuesday evening in the Woodland Indian Art Gallery, which is managed by Greg “Biskakone” Johnson. Cari Singer, the HOC On-Site Coordinator was very pleased that this event could finally take place in our community, and the clients who made it to every class got to walk away with some knowledge, and beautiful cradle boards for their babies. One of the reasons HOC wanted to do cradle board making was to help promote safe sleeping for babies, since Native American infants are three times more likely to die from SIDS than Caucasian infants. Chi miigwetch to the HOC clients that faithfully made it to every class, the instructor Wayne Valliere, Greg Johnson for allowing us to utilize the art gallery space for our event, and the others that pitched in their time, and help.
